Located in the heart of Hampton Roads

Historic Fort Monroe on the Chesapeake Bay in Hampton is the preferred site for the Virginia STEAM Academy boarding high school. Fort Monroe sits in the heart of STEAM-dense Hampton Roads. It is close to to NASA Langley Research Center, Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, Newport News Shipbuilding, Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center, and military bases, to name only a few STEAM-rich institutions. In addition, highly rated universities and K-12 partners are also nearby, thus creating a laboratory for the effective design, delivery, measurement and continuous improvement of the state’s premiere public educational offering, committed to significantly expanding the level of science, technology, engineering and mathematics teaching and learning to measurably and positively impact the Commonwealth of Virginia’s economic future.

The building lease at Fort Monroe is near completion. The lease is for 275,000 square feet of space at $1/year for 50 years with two, 20-year additional terms. The capital renovation costs will be approximately $15 million to open three of the buildings for the initial class of students.

Dollars are being pursued to complete architectural drawings, prepare a state historic tax credit proposal, and break ground for renovation.
