Dr. D had taught at Hollins University since 1977. In 2016, she taught Games, Puzzles and Logic at Virginia STEAM Academy’s first girls-only Summer STEAM session. She also collaborated with Virginia STEAM Academy to deliver a professional development seminar at the Science Museum of Virginia in Richmond. Dr. D epitomized joyful learning. We are grateful for the time we had together. She will be missed.

vasteamSummer STEAM 2015 Ambassador Turner Bumbary, a freshman at Thomas Jefferson High School of Science and Technology in Northern Virginia, is headed to Princeton University to present at the Integrated STEM Conference in March. Bumbary designed and tested a $50 weather infrastructure that accurately predicts weather patterns two weeks in advance. Bumbary’s interest in weather was peaked at Summer STEAM 2015. Along with about a dozen highly able peers from across the Commonwealth of Virginia, Bumbary was invited to study mathematical patterns in nature with Professor John Adam at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. “Professor Adam asked, ‘Why is it harder to see through fog than rain?,” said Bumbary. As students examined the mathematical constructs of Professor Adam’s question, Bumbary began to think about how to apply mathematics to design an inexpensive but sound weather infrastructure that could predict potentially catastrophic weather conditions. Bumbary reasoned that better predictive power might help developing nations in particular avoid catastrophic outcomes and recover more quickly. As one of only two freshmen invited to join his high school’s Junior Underclassman Multi-Disciplinary (JUMP) Lab, Bumbary fine-tuned his research and submitted his design to the Integrated STEM conference. Congratulations, Ambassador Turner.

“This is the best way to spend my Saturday afternoon,” exclaimed young scholar Kayne M. of Front Royal, Virginia. On February 18th, Randolph-Macon Academy and Virginia STEAM Academy welcomed Kayne and 41 other young regional scholars to a full day of STEAM design-build, mini labs, and deep dive sessions in celebration of Randolph-Macon Academy’s 125th anniversary. Students participated in chemistry, physics, environment and conservation, and biology labs. Students capped the day with a panel discussion co-moderated by a Randolph-Macon Academy eighth grader and a Summer STEAM 2016 Ambassador. On February 25th, Virginia STEAM Academy collaborated with Richard Bland College of William and Mary (RBC) to host a second, free Saturday STEAM intensive on RBC’s campus. Thirty one middle school students tried their hands at coding, chemistry and physics and then participated in a panel discussion with professors and an industry leader. The back-to-back STEAM intensives illustrated Virginia STEAM Academy’s commitment to partnership. In addition to Randolph-Macon Academy and Richard Bland College of William and Mary, Virginia STEAM Academy collaborated with Appomattox Regional Governor’s School, the Center for Excellence in Education, Code VA, Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing, Friends of the National Zoo, George Mason University Smithsonian School of Conservation, MITRE, Petersburg Public Schools, and the Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum. The goals of the Saturday STEAM intensives were to give students a taste of Summer STEAM, encourage them to apply to Summer STEAM 2017, and provide regional Summer STEAM ambassadors an extended learning opportunity.

The CRES Conservation Rangers competed at the Virginia/DC State 2016 FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Animal Allies Tournament on December 3 and 4th at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The group, comprised of third grader Sohil K.; fifth graders Lucas M. and Viraj G.; and sixth graders Arnav K., Fairfax County Public Schools and Summer STEAM Ambassador (’16) Conner T, and Nikhil C. were among the top 69 teams in Virginia and DC. This Tournament is the largest LEGO Robotics competition in the world.

The team achieved the second-place trophy for Robot Performance in their division, and were also awarded the third-place trophy for the overall Champions Award that recognizes a team that embodies the FLL experience. To receive this honor, the team must represent the Core Values of FLL (sportsmanship and teamwork) while achieving excellence and innovation in all aspects of the tournament in Robot Design and original Research Project.

Over the past 12 weeks, the team custom designed, built, and pre-programmed a LEGO EV3 robot to accomplish various “missions” on a 4’x8′ game field and score as many points as possible in 150 seconds. Their robot earned the second highest score among a field of 69 teams, and third overall when including the 39 additional middle school teams. In addition to spending hundreds of hours designing the robot and programming it, the group did extensive work over the past few months on the required topic: learning about how animals and humans interact and how to improve upon the relationship to benefit the animal, the humans, or both. As part of their research, the team toured the aviation simulation lab at MITRE in October, visited the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, toured the Fairfax County Animal Shelter, met with a dog trainer, and Skyped with one of 70 specialized animal behaviorists veterinarians in the world, received input from the Chief Digital Officer at The Franklin Institute, and conducted firsthand research via an original online survey. At the tournament, they presented their findings and solution for a virtual-reality based environment for shelter dogs proposal to judges, complete with a scale model of a prototype. More information can be found on the team’s web blog at http://tinyurl.com/cresfll2016 and at http://www.firstlegoleague.org.

Virginia STEAM Academy is pleased to announce it has signed a partnership agreement with the Center for Excellence in Education. Headquartered in McLean, Virginia, CEE was founded in 1983 to nurture high school and university scholars to careers of excellence and leadership in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and to encourage international collaboration between and among leaders in the global community. CEE is internationally recognized for its Research Science Institute which selects 80 of the world’s most accomplished high school students to participate in a free, six-week summer institute in science, engineering and research at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

CEE is gearing up to pilot BioSTEM Clubs which will offer diverse STEM opportunities to students in undeserved urban and rural schools. CEE is piloting its BioSTEM Clubs in an effort to increase awareness of STEM research and career opportunities for underserved students and promote their success in STEM fields.

Virginia STEAM Academy and CEE commit to mutual outreach and sharing of program resources and contacts. Specifically, Virginia STEAM Academy looks forward to identifying Virginia STEAM Academy alumni to act as BioSTEM champions in participating BioSTEM Club schools, identifying Virginia STEAM Academy instructors to participate in CEE-sponsored BioSTEM Club activities, such as webinars and career panels, and sharing and promoting CEE programing opportunities, including USA Biology Olympiad and Research Science Institute, among Virginia STEAM Academy participants.

Likewise, CEE welcomes the opportunity to promote Virginia STEAM Academy resident and teaching assistant position opportunities among CEE graduates, identify CEE leaders and Research Science Institute faculty to serve as keynote speakers or panelists at Virginia STEAM Academy symposia, webinars, and other events, and invite exceptional Virginia STEAM Academy ambassadors, referred by Virginia STEAM Academy, to apply to Research Science Institute.

Virginia STEAM Academy Summer STEAM Ambassador (’13) Katie Bird of Rocky Mount is serving as a science demonstrator at her local library, Franklin County Library. Ambassador Katie was selected by Virginia STEAM Academy and the Science Museum of Virginia to pilot a program where high school students with a zeal for STEAM and commitment to service learning serve as junior demonstrators in their local library’s efforts to inspire and expose younger students to STEAM. Ambassador Katie trained with library staff. She guided student participants in roller coaster design and, this month, building and launching paper rockets.
